Raw footage straight off the camera rarely tells the whole story. Color grading is where the mood actually gets built.
I always start with white balance and exposure before touching anything creative — a solid base makes the rest of the job easier. From there I work contrast and color balance separately across shadows, midtones and highlights. Small adjustments, not big jumps.
That's the difference between footage that looks 'edited' and footage that just looks right.
